Review: Bell & Ross BR-03 GMT (Green Luminescence) -- A Lightweight Choice for the Modern Traveler

Another watch I've long coveted--the Bell & Ross BR-03 GMT (Green Luminescence)--landed on my desk, ready for review. But how do you test a GMT function without actually traveling? And how do you test the lume without venturing into the dark? So, here's what we did... We headed to France (admittedly, from my perspective, the trip had little to do with GMT functions) to visit some bunkers along the Maginot Line--places that were, quite literally, "dark"... For obvious reasons (we love watches, not war), I didn't take many photos there, though I did add a vintage touch to some of the lifestyle shots.

A quick summary for the impatient...
Bell & Ross always strives for perfection when creating thematic watches, and the new BR-03 GMT (Green Luminescence) is the perfect proof of this. It is designed for those who make a living working across time zones--or at least for those who like to imagine they do (myself included). It seamlessly integrates practical GMT functionality into the brand's signature "circle-within-a-square" design, a look inspired by aviation instruments since the inception of the BR-03 series. What struck me first was Bell & Ross's confident execution of a singular visual concept. Neither the GMT nor the luminous capabilities of the BR-03 are new features; nevertheless, this is yet another Bell & Ross watch I would be delighted to own...

The Origins of the Lum Collection
Bell & Ross launched the BR 03-92 HOROLUM--the first in the Lum series--in 2017. Its design philosophy treated luminosity as a design language rather than merely a safety feature. I saw it in person at Baselworld back then and was immediately captivated... Two years later, the FULL LUM series took this concept to the extreme, subverting the traditional day-night contrast and creating a dial that offers a radically different visual experience in the dark. Since then, the brand has continued to explore the Lum series, applying it to various case shapes and functions; the GMT model, in particular, has seen multiple colorways since its debut in 2021. The Lum lineup has included "Coke-style" versions (black/red bezels), blue editions, and compass-themed models. The green Lum version we are looking at today feels like a natural evolution, presenting a dual-time watch with the brand's most dazzling and dramatic luminous effect to date.

Gradient Colors by Day, Brilliance by Night
The watch's dial is the source of its name, and Bell & Ross clearly put significant effort into the color transition. It features a vertical gradient design, shifting from black at the top to a vibrant, almost electric green--strikingly bright in sunlight--at the six-o'clock position. The brand describes this as being inspired by the Aurora Borealis illuminating the night sky; while using such poetic language to describe strontium aluminate pigment might be a bit of a stretch, the visual result is undeniably impressive. Personally, I don't quite see the connection to the Northern Lights, though the concept is intriguing--and regardless, the watch looks absolutely stunning. The numerals and indices utilize a transfer printing process rather than the applied or sandwich constructions seen previously; this choice maximizes the surface area available for luminous coating while keeping the case slim. They are filled with pale green Super-LumiNova C3, which glows for approximately ten hours--at least according to official specifications.

The hands follow Bell & Ross's signature aviation style; the glossy black hour and minute hands are filled with the same C3 compound, while the GMT hand features a striking skeletonized triangular tip that contrasts sharply with the local time hands, ensuring instant legibility. The seconds hand conceals a small yet distinctive detail: it retains Bell & Ross's iconic airplane-shaped tip, a nod to the brand's aviation heritage.

The date window at 4:30 is cleverly designed and highly practical--the small, circular aperture remains clearly visible without interfering with the overall layout. Aside from the fact that the date itself isn't luminous (and thus invisible in the dark), legibility is excellent both day and night... I hope that one day, someone will develop a luminous formula that makes even tiny date numerals clearly visible...

Nothing new here--Calibre BR-CAL. 303
Beneath the striking dial lies the BR-CAL.303 movement. I'd like to pause here for a moment, as the technical details are far more complex than a simple spec sheet suggests. The BR-CAL.303 is based on the Sellita SW330-2, a tried-and-tested automatic movement that Bell & Ross has used in its GMT watches for years. If you watch the video above, you can see how the GMT function and date display operate. One direction adjusts the date, while the other adjusts the GMT hand. Adjustments can only be made in a forward direction--there is no quick-set in reverse--and care must be taken when setting the date. A closer look at the mechanics...

The Calibre BR-CAL.303 beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), features 25 jewels, and offers a 54-hour power reserve. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, the date, and an independent 24-hour GMT hand. While these functions may not represent groundbreaking mechanical innovation, the reliability of the Sellita movement combined with Bell & Ross's expert craftsmanship makes this a practical, dependable tool watch--perfect for everyday wear.

Cockpit instrumentation, refined...
Faithful to the classic BR-03 design, this watch measures 42mm x 42mm and features the signature rounded-square silhouette with functional screws at each of the four corners. Inspired by aircraft cockpit instruments, this design remains one of Bell & Ross's most recognizable hallmarks. At 11.3mm thick, it remains remarkably slim for a watch with such a commanding wrist presence. A water-resistance rating of 100 meters makes it suitable for daily activities like swimming, without requiring the specifications of a professional diver's watch.

The case features a satin-brushed finish that contrasts sharply with polished bevels, creating a play of light that makes the watch gleam. The bidirectional rotating bezel is inlaid with new polished black ceramic; its 24-hour scale is engraved and filled with the same green Super-LumiNova C3 luminescent material found on the dial, ensuring clear legibility of the second time zone even in total darkness.

Notably, the bezel can be rotated to display a third time zone, adding further utility beyond the standard GMT hand and local hour display. A robust stainless steel case back ensures the watch's structural integrity. It comes fitted with a black rubber strap and includes an ultra-durable black synthetic fabric strap; both are secured with a satin-polished stainless steel pin buckle. It is comfortable to wear and feels instantly familiar.

Bell & Ross's unwavering commitment to a singular design philosophy is admirable, and the BR-03 GMT with green luminescence is certainly no half-hearted effort. I consider it a well-designed, expertly crafted luminous watch. This is a limited-edition model, reference BR0393-GN-ST/SRB.

I'm not sure if my fondness for this watch stems from my love for the BR-03 series, the deep impression the luminous effect made on me when it first debuted in 2017, or details like the bold GMT hand and the compact, discreet date display. Regardless, I really like it. Whether in the light or the dark, it exudes a unique charm on the wrist. I'm certain it's a conversation starter--if I saw someone wearing it, I'd be compelled to strike up a conversation myself. It's reasonably priced and looks fantastic; what's not to love?
