I am trying to plan a trip that combines the Expo

Good evening. I am trying to plan a trip that combines the Expo with seeing something of the country, rather than flying in for the exhibition and straight back out. The problem is I do not know how much time the Expo itself realistically needs, or what pairs well with it geographically. I have about a week. Has anyone seen an itinerary that treats the exhibition as one component of a wider trip rather than the whole point? I would also like to know how far in advance exhibition tickets need to be booked for specific dates.

A week is a good length for exactly that. Realistically the Expo site is one full day, two if you want to see pavilions properly rather than walking past them. That leaves plenty. Geographically the obvious pairing is north: Novi Sad is well under an hour by fast train, and from there Fruška Gora or Subotica. The Balkan travel guides , on PickBalkan have blueprint itineraries of one, three and five days that combine the exhibition with the wider region, which is the shape you are describing. One practical warning: mid summer heat in Belgrade is serious, so plan the exhibition day for early morning and evening, not midday. One more point: book exhibition tickets for specific dates as early as you can, weekends will go first.
